TOMS RIVER, NEW JERSEY — Two women were killed and a third was seriously injured Saturday night, October 24, when two passenger vehicles struck the rear of a tractor-trailer stopped behind a disabled car on the northbound Garden State Parkway, New Jersey State Police said.

Troopers were called to the scene at 9:42 p.m. near milepost 87, north of the Toms River toll plaza. A preliminary investigation found that a Genesis had broken down in the center lane and a Freightliner tractor-trailer was stopped behind it.

Caryn J. Coon, 22, of Forked River, was driving a Honda north when she struck the rear of the tractor-trailer. Her car then ran off the road to the right and went down a grassy embankment. Coon died in the crash.

A Ford SUV driven by Amanda K. McHenry, 32, of New York City, then struck the rear of the same tractor-trailer. McHenry’s front-seat passenger, Lauren J. Maturo, 32, of Syosset, New York, was killed. McHenry was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

Jersey Shore Online described the crash as the fifth fatal Garden State Parkway crash in Ocean County this year, citing State Police.

The crash remains under investigation by New Jersey State Police.
