DONNA, TEXAS β€” A welfare check at a Love’s Travel Stop in Donna turned into a federal human smuggling investigation Friday morning after police arrived to check on a driver who had been reported missing by his truck’s owner β€” and found the driver gone and 10 to 15 people believed to be in the country illegally locked inside the trailer.

Donna Police Chief Gilbert Guerrero said officers responded around 9 a.m. after the truck’s owner called in a welfare check on one of his drivers who had been parked at the Love’s on Friday. When officers arrived they found the truck but no driver. A search of the rig turned up the migrants inside.

U.S. Border Patrol took over the investigation. The driver’s whereabouts remain unknown.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
