WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA — A truck driver was so absorbed in a show playing on his tablet that it took an officer two full miles of lights and sirens to get his attention after he bypassed the Walnut Creek scales, CHP Golden Gate Division said.

A commercial officer tried to stop the driver after he skipped the scales. Even with lights and sirens activated, the driver did not respond until the officer had followed him for roughly two miles. When officers finally made contact, they found him watching a show on a tablet while operating an 80,000-pound vehicle on the freeway.

“This behavior is unacceptable and puts everyone at risk,” CHP said. “Distracted driving is preventable, costly, and dangerous. The safest choice is to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and your mind on driving.”

CHP did not say what citations were issued or release the driver’s name.
