FREDERICK COUNTY, MARYLAND — A 55-year-old Baltimore truck driver was airlifted to the hospital after his Freightliner struck an unoccupied Toyota Corolla parked on the shoulder of Interstate 70 and continued off the road into a tree, trapping him inside and forcing the closure of all lanes in both directions overnight.
Frederick County Fire and Rescue Service responded around 11:15 p.m. on August 17 near Mt. Phillip Road. Crews found the driver trapped in the cab and worked to extricate him while I-70 east and westbound lanes were completely shut down. He was flown to a hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not immediately released.
Maryland State Police said the preliminary investigation showed the Freightliner struck the driver’s side of the parked Corolla before leaving the roadway and hitting the tree. The Maryland Department of the Environment responded to evaluate potential damage to the truck’s saddle tanks. All lanes reopened early Tuesday morning.
