SUV Gets Stuck in Gravel on Arizona Runaway Truck Ramp; Highway Patrol Says Ramps Are a Last Resort for Brake Failure, Not Pullouts or Rest Stops

KINGMAN, ARIZONA — An SUV became stuck in a runaway truck ramp near Kingman on October 29, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol is using the incident to remind motorists that the ramps are for emergencies only.

A Highway Patrol trooper responded to the Kingman area to help with the vehicle. AZDPS shared images of a black SUV stuck in the gravel arrestor bed, which is designed to slow and then stop runaway vehicles through friction.

“These ramps are designed to save lives by providing a last-resort stopping option for heavy commercial vehicles experiencing brake failure or loss of speed control on steep grades,” AZDPS said. “Using a runaway truck ramp for any non-emergency purpose can create serious safety risks for everyone on the roadway. They are not pullouts, scenic overlooks, rest stops, or exit ramps.”

The agency urged drivers to read the warning signs and stay off the ramp unless it is a true brake-failure emergency. “It could cost you more than a tow removal bill. It could cost lives. Runaway truck ramps are for emergencies, not convenience.”

AZDPS did not say which ramp was involved, whether the SUV driver was cited, or whether anyone was hurt.
