ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS — Two tractor-trailers and an SUV crashed on northbound Interstate 295 near mile marker 3.4 in Attleboro Friday afternoon, with one sand-hauling truck rolling onto its side and blocking all northbound lanes while leaking vehicle fluids that crews had to contain before they reached nearby storm drains.

Attleboro Fire Department responded at approximately 2:53 p.m. on August 28. Heavy gridlock made reaching the scene so difficult that emergency vehicles had to enter the highway and travel south in the northbound lanes to get there.

Two people were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries — the male driver of the overturned tractor-trailer and the female driver of the SUV. Firefighters deployed containment bins and used sand from the spilled load to control leaking vehicle fluids and prevent them from reaching soft ground and storm drains nearby.

Crews remained on scene while the truck was uprighted and secured for towing. All northbound lanes of I-295 reopened at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
