CORTLANDT, NEW YORK — An overturned tractor-trailer at the busy Annsville Circle in Cortlandt kept emergency crews on scene for nearly seven hours Tuesday night after the trailer tipped onto its side and a heavy wrecker called in to remove it malfunctioned and spilled more than 20 gallons of hydraulic fluid onto the roadway.

Continental Village Fire Department responded at approximately 9:21 p.m. on August 18. Arriving crews found the trailer on its side while the truck itself remained upright and undamaged. No injuries were reported and EMS units were canceled. Firefighters assisted New York State Police with traffic control while waiting for a heavy wrecker to arrive.

When the wrecker got to work, equipment malfunctioned and dumped over 20 gallons of hydraulic fluid onto the road, turning a standard recovery into a hazmat cleanup. Firefighters placed absorbent material and oil booms to contain the fluid while the towing company repaired the wrecker on scene. Once fixed, crews successfully removed the trailer and reopened the roadway.

Fire crews cleared the scene and returned to service at approximately 4 a.m. Wednesday, nearly seven hours after the initial call.
