BUFFALO, NEW YORK — A Missouri commercial vehicle driver accidentally followed his GPS into Canada and ended up arrested when he returned to the United States. Border agents discovered he was a convicted felon and sex offender in illegal possession of two firearms.
On March 24, 2026, CBP officers at the Buffalo Port of Entry encountered the 55-year-old Missouri man after Canadian Border Services Agency returned him to the U.S. at the Peace Bridge. He had inadvertently crossed into Canada while following GPS directions. He declared two firearms to CBSA — a Charter Arms .38 Special and an FIE .22-caliber pistol. CBSA detained the weapons and handed them back to CBP officers at the Peace Bridge.
CBP officers then ran additional checks on the driver and discovered he was a convicted felon and sex offender. As a convicted felon, he had no legal right to possess the firearms. Officers arrested him on the spot and turned him and both weapons over to the Buffalo Police Department. He faces a felony charge for criminal possession of a weapon.
“The safety and security of our ports and communities is a top priority,” said Acting Port Director Sharon Swiatek. “Our CBP officers continue to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to enforcing the law and preventing prior felons from possessing dangerous weapons.”
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
