Pennsylvania Turnpike and State Police Launch First-Ever Toll Enforcement Operation in April — 67,000 Vehicles at Risk of Impoundment on the Spot for Unpaid Tolls

0

MIDDLETOWN, PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and Pennsylvania State Police are teaming up for their first joint toll enforcement initiative in April. Troopers will target aggressive drivers and motorists driving on suspended registrations linked to unpaid Turnpike tolls — and they will impound vehicles on the spot.

The statewide operation runs throughout April. Troopers will issue citations and impound vehicles tied to suspended registrations from unpaid tolls and fees. Drivers who rack up $250 in unpaid tolls — or four unpaid Toll By Plate invoices — face referral to PennDOT for registration suspension. Since 2018, the Turnpike has sent more than 200,000 suspension eligibility letters to Pennsylvania-registered owners. More than 67,000 vehicles remain in active suspension status today.

Drivers whose vehicles get impounded will face additional fees on top of what they already owe, including standard towing rates.

What Officials Are Saying

“Cracking down on drivers who have consistently ignored multiple invoices and outreach is a priority for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission,” said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. “The best way to avoid being stopped is to pay what you owe today.”

“Through our partnership with the Pennsylvania Turnpike, we are taking decisive action against aggressive driving and vehicles operating with suspended registrations due to unpaid tolls,” said Cpl. Richard Levan of PSP Troop T. “By holding drivers accountable, deterring unsafe behavior, and enforcing the rules of the road, we protect every motorist who travels these highways.”

PA Turnpike COO Craig Shuey added: “Customers have more ways than ever to pay tolls, including digital, web-based and cash options. Still, we have those who don’t think the law applies to them. We are grateful for our partnership with the Pennsylvania State Police and their willingness to prioritize this operation.”

Drivers can sidestep enforcement entirely by settling outstanding balances through E-ZPass or Toll By Plate. E-ZPass cuts tolls by up to 50%. The Turnpike will share enforcement results in May following the operation.

‘She Loved Everybody’

On Sunday, a large group of family and friends gathered at the intersection, singing songs and sharing hugs as they honored Goosehead Sr.’s life. She had recently returned to Winnipeg after visiting her mother in Bloodvein First Nation. She leaves behind four daughters and had recently become a grandmother.

Her older sister Kim Scott described a woman full of warmth and humor. “She was a very strong woman, loved everybody, loved to laugh, sing, was always there when you needed a helping hand,” Scott said. “She was loving, she loved everybody. And fun, she was always funny. That’s how we want to remember her.”

Scott said the loss has left her in shock. “We’re still trying to make sense of it and the events leading up to it. Just trying to grasp it and come to terms with everything,” she said.

Friend Everett Campeau, who had known Goosehead Sr. for about five years, said she had a “really beautiful spirit” and never hesitated to tell those around her that she loved them. He had plans to spend time with her Monday and still can’t believe she is gone. “Everybody that came out probably knew how she was a good person, and she was lovable and laughable. She had a good spirit in her,” Campeau said.

Anyone with information or footage from around the time of the incident is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police traffic unit at 204-986-7085 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers online or at 204-786-TIPS.

Indiana Man Arrested After Stealing Beer Truck, Leading Multi-County Chase, and Aiming It at Deputy Deploying Stop Sticks — Faces Attempted Murder

0

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, INDIANA — An Evansville man faces attempted murder charges after stealing a beer truck Friday afternoon, leading deputies on a chase into Posey County, steering the semi directly at a deputy trying to deploy stop sticks, and crashing into a field after striking a patrol car, according to a news release from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Noah Robinson.

At approximately 3:07 p.m. on March 27, 2026, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a report of a stolen beer truck out of Evansville. Deputies spotted the truck traveling westbound on Diamond Avenue near Resurrection Drive and tried to pull it over. The driver refused and kept going into Posey County.

During the chase, a deputy stepped out of his patrol vehicle to deploy stop sticks. The driver, Randall Baker, 41, of Evansville, steered the semi directly toward the deputy. Baker missed the deputy but slammed into the patrol car, causing extensive damage. The semi then left the roadway and came to rest in a field. The deputy was not injured.

Baker faces the following preliminary charges:

  • attempted murder
  • auto theft
  • criminal recklessness

PennDOT Installs Warning Signs on I-81 After Years of Tractor-Trailers Cutting Through City and Striking Low Amtrak Bridge

0

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA — PennDOT recently put up advisory signs on Interstate 81 warning tractor-trailer drivers to stay off Front Street. The signs target a years-long problem of trucks cutting through the city and striking a low-clearance Amtrak bridge near UPMC Harrisburg.

The bridge clears just 12 feet 6 inches. Drivers who ignore the warnings risk crushing their trailers on impact. PennDOT mounted the signs beneath exit signs on I-81 to intercept trucks before they turn onto Front Street — a riverside road that runs directly toward the Amtrak bridge used to turn trains.

State Rep. Nate Davidson pushed for the signs after years of complaints from Harrisburg residents. “We’re just trying to find a way for the residents of Uptown and Midtown Harrisburg to cross a little safer and not have to worry about a big tractor-trailer cutting through the city,” Davidson said. “And also, by the way, they go downtown, and they hit the bridge, and they clog up traffic at the downtown of Harrisburg as well.”

Nearby resident Erica Bryce runs a bed and breakfast two miles south of the bridge. She has watched the problem play out firsthand. She once flagged down a driver herself and asked why he was on Front Street. “Do you know that there is a clearance up ahead?” she told him. “He said no. I said, ‘Why are you on this road?’ He said, ‘I’m cutting through from 81 to 83.'”

Will the Signs Actually Work?

That remains the big question. PennDOT ruled out using clanker balls — the hanging devices used in Newark, Delaware, that physically strike overheight vehicles before they reach a bridge — citing safety concerns. The agency says drivers ultimately have to take responsibility. “They don’t pay attention to it. They’re focused on where they’re going. So, you know, this is a very difficult one. How do you stop it from happening? It’s personal behavior,” one official said.

Truck Driver Admitted He Spotted Failed Air Bag, Ordered a Replacement, Then Hit the Road Without Waiting — CHP Grapevine Pulls Truck From Service

0

GRAPEVINE, CALIFORNIA — A driver admitted to CHP inspectors that he had spotted a failed air bag the day before, ordered a replacement, and then decided not to wait for it to arrive before hitting the road.

The image shared by CHP Grapevine shows a visibly ruptured air bag on the truck’s suspension system — a clear safety defect that compromises the vehicle’s ability to maintain proper ride height, load distribution, and stability.

CHP used the stop as a reminder to drivers: pre-trip inspections exist for a reason. A known defect is not something to drive around while waiting for a part to show up.

“Don’t forget to check your airbags on the pre-trip inspection,” CHP Grapevine said.
