BALDWIN, FLORIDA — A 29-year-old Atlanta mother who was walking through a truck stop parking lot with her husband and their 2-year-old child was struck and killed by a semi-truck making a turn at a Love’s Travel Stop off US-301 and Interstate 10 on September 15. No criminal charges will be filed against the truck driver.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred around 7:20 p.m. Estefany De Los Angeles was walking through the parking lot when the truck, which was turning, struck her. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver reportedly did not see her and was cooperating with investigators. Based on video evidence, JSO determined no criminal charges were warranted. The driver was issued a citation and released at the scene.
The death marks the 124th traffic fatality in Duval County this year and the 31st involving a pedestrian.
Family friend Natasha Cruz remembered Estefany as a joyful, warm, and driven young woman who was enrolled in college while raising her young child, working toward a dream of becoming a criminal lawyer.
“She was joyful, she was warm, and everybody around her loved her,” Cruz said. “She was currently enrolled in a college at the same time she was taking care of her baby. She was the woman who loved to learn.”
She is survived by her husband and their 2-year-old child.
