SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA — A truck driver transporting a large excavator on eastbound US Highway 50 failed to secure the bucket arm of the backhoe before passing under the Bradshaw Road overcrossing Wednesday morning, striking the leading edge of the bridge, knocking loose a 6 to 10 inch chunk of concrete, and releasing oil from the excavator onto the overpass and onto a vehicle traveling directly behind the truck.
CHP East Sacramento Officer K. Nielsen responded to the crash at approximately 8:20 a.m. on September 24. A Caltrans bridge crew inspected the structure and determined there was no immediate hazard and no immediate repairs were needed. No lanes were closed and no injuries were reported. Valley Division Commercial Officer M. Khan also responded to assist.
“Moral of the story: Be sure to secure your load properly and double check the high point of your load before setting off on your trip,” CHP said.
