NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — A truck driver hauling groceries for Aldi was arrested early Thursday morning after telling police he intentionally drove his semi-truck through the front of the East Nashville Aldi he was supposed to be delivering to, leaving the cab of the truck inside the building and causing an estimated $250,000 or more in damage.
Metro Police responded around midnight on September 17 to the Aldi on Gallatin Avenue. They found 34-year-old Kristofer Scruggs still at the scene. Surveillance footage shows Scruggs turning into the parking lot from Gallatin Avenue and accelerating in the moments before impact. The truck crashed through the storefront and came to rest with the entire cab inside the building, damaging the store’s structure, aisles, and products.
Scruggs told officers he drove into the store on purpose. He denied any suicidal or homicidal thoughts. Officers observed no signs of impairment. He was taken into custody based on his own statements and booked into the Davidson County jail on felony vandalism charges. His bond was set at $35,000.
No injuries were reported. It is not yet clear how long repairs will take or whether the damage will affect the store’s operating hours.
