PHOENIX, ARIZONA — A concrete pump truck was left partially dangling off an Interstate 10 overpass Tuesday morning after a crash involving two commercial vehicles and a pickup truck in Phoenix.
The crash happened just after 7 a.m. on Sept. 15 on the I-10 overpass at University Drive.
Concrete Pump Truck Left Hanging Off Overpass
Phoenix police said two semis were involved in the crash.
One was a concrete pump truck that ended up partially hanging off the westbound overpass.
A second semi, which was hauling ceramic floor tiles, overturned and struck a traffic light post.
A pickup truck was also involved and sustained front-end damage.
Police said no one was seriously injured.
Brake Failure Suspected, Official Cause Not Yet Determined
Dustin Foote, who was at the scene helping provide equipment for cleanup, said he heard from people involved that one truck may have lost its brakes before the crash.
“We heard a truck lost their brakes, blew through a light, it hit another diesel truck involved in a very bad accident here,” Foote said.
Officials have not confirmed which vehicle may have experienced brake failure.
The official cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Cleanup and Traffic Signal Repairs Extended Closure
The crash caused a major cleanup effort on and around the overpass.
Crews had to handle multiple towing jobs and remove the damaged traffic light after one of the trucks struck the pole.
The traffic light then had to be reinstalled, adding to the length of the closure.
I-10 remained open, but drivers were advised to avoid the intersection and use Broadway to reach 40th Street.
CDL Holder Stresses Pre-Trip Inspections
Foote, who said he has held a CDL for more than a decade, said crashes like this are a reminder of the importance of checking brakes before driving.
“When a driver loses his brakes, there’s not much you can do,” Foote said. “That’s why pre-trip inspections are very important. You want to check your brakes, make sure your airflow is good, you want to do a good pre-trip to avoid accidents and crashes like this.”
