CHEAT LAKE, WEST VIRGINIA — A car hauler trailer caught fire on westbound Interstate 68 near Cheat Lake Tuesday evening, shutting down lanes and backing up traffic to the Cheat Lake Bridge for hours before the fast lane was reopened just before 10 p.m.

The Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department posted around 6 p.m. asking drivers to avoid the area. Photos shared by the department showed multiple fire engines on scene responding to the burning car hauler. A viewer photo captured heavy smoke in the area around 6:15 p.m. and additional footage taken around 7:15 p.m. showed traffic at a standstill on the Cheat Lake Bridge.

The Cheat Lake Fire Department also responded. No injuries were reported, according to a Mon County 911 official.

At 9:52 p.m. the Brookhaven VFD updated its post saying the fast lane had reopened and drivers should proceed with caution. The department later cleared the scene and turned control over to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.
