JEFFERSON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA — A New Mexico truck driver and U.S. Army veteran was killed in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 80 in Jefferson County, and officials say his missing dog has now been found safe.
The crash happened at approximately 3:59 p.m. on Aug. 20, 2026, on I-80 East near mile marker 74.3 in Union Township, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Freightliner Struck Slowed Tractor-Trailer
Officials said a Freightliner tractor-trailer struck the rear of another tractor-trailer that had slowed because of traffic conditions ahead.
The driver of the Freightliner was identified as 59-year-old Michael Rougier of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong pronounced Rougier dead at 4:35 p.m.
The coroner’s office said Rougier died from blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.
Victim Was Army Veteran
Officials said Rougier was a United States Army veteran who honorably served his country for 10 years.
The driver of the other tractor-trailer was not injured.
The crash closed I-80 East for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
The Pennsylvania State Police, Corsica Fire Department, Brookville Fire Department, Jefferson County EMS, and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office responded.
Dog Ejected and Found Safe After Search
At the time of the crash, Rougier’s dog, Diesel, a Rottweiler, was traveling with him in the tractor-trailer.
Officials said Diesel was reportedly ejected from the vehicle and fled into a wooded area near the crash scene.
Coroner Furlong and Chief Deputy Coroner Jason Stiver searched the area after the crash but were initially unable to locate him.
The coroner’s office later announced that Diesel had been found safe as of 10 a.m. Friday.
Officials said Diesel will be reunited with Rougier’s family.
Coroner Offers Condolences
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Rougier’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Coroner Furlong said.
Officials said locating Diesel was an effort to bring some comfort to Rougier’s loved ones after the fatal crash.
