PINAL COUNTY, ARIZONA — AZDPS Highway Patrol troopers conducted a targeted enforcement detail on October 8 in the active I-10 construction zone between Phoenix and Tucson, citing multiple commercial vehicle drivers for ignoring the “Commercial Trucks Right Lane Only” requirement — with some drivers observed traveling in the left lane for more than four miles.

Five CMVs were stopped during the detail. Troopers said the trucks had been traveling in the left lane of the two-lane construction zone for distances ranging from 1.5 to over 4 miles, causing traffic to slow and bunch up behind them before accelerating once the trucks returned to the right lane.

The situation was made more dangerous by the construction environment itself. Numerous concrete barriers along the corridor restrict access to emergency shoulders, leaving little margin for error. “These lane violations directly affected the overall flow and safety of traffic in the area,” AZDPS said. “Those signs aren’t a suggestion.”
It was the second such detail on this stretch of I-10 in recent months. In August, AZDPS targeted five other commercial vehicles for the same violation in the same construction zone. Truck traffic has been restricted to the right lane on parts of I-10 in Arizona for years due to an ongoing interstate widening project.
