TEMPE, ARIZONA — An oversized load carrying a mobile home on AZ-202 during morning rush hour in the rain on September 24 was pulled over by AZDPS Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Unit troopers and found to have no functioning rear trailer lights, missing required safety equipment, an escort driver operating on a suspended license, and an inaccurate oversize permit that was subsequently revoked.
The truck was traveling from Phoenix to Payson when troopers stopped it. None of the trailer’s rear lights were working as passenger vehicles passed on both sides of the wide load in rainy conditions. The mobile home was also missing two red flags on the front, two amber flashing lights on the widest front corners, and two red flashing lights on both rear sides.
Making matters worse, the rear escort pilot car driver knew the trailer lights had not been working since between I-10 and the 202 but failed to notify the truck driver over CB radio. That escort driver was also found to be operating on a suspended license, making the escort unauthorized. The oversize permit listed an inaccurate width and was revoked. ADOT’s permit office was notified.
The load was placed out of service.
“Unsafe equipment, inaccurate permits, and unqualified drivers put everyone on the road at risk — especially during heavy traffic and poor weather,” AZDPS said.
