SAN YSIDRO, CALIFORNIA — A 25-year-old Amazon truck driver was ejected from his cab and suffered major injuries Thursday morning after jackknifing on southbound Interstate 5 near the US-Mexico border, blocking all southbound lanes and cutting off entry into Mexico through the Port of San Ysidro for nearly six hours.
CHP reported the crash around 4 a.m. near Camino de la Plaza. The driver, from El Sobrante, California, was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and struck a concrete wall, causing the rig to jackknife across multiple lanes. The force of the impact ejected the driver from the cab. Witnesses said the truck was traveling approximately 60 mph when it struck an overpass pillar.
Four lanes were affected by fuel and vehicle fluids following the crash. Officers requested absorbent material and Caltrans responded to clean up the spill. The Camino de la Plaza on-ramp to southbound I-5 was also closed. By 7:25 a.m. four right lanes into Mexico remained blocked while three left lanes had reopened. All lanes were fully reopened around 9:45 a.m.
The driver was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. His condition was not immediately known. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors. The crash remains under investigation.
