GARY, INDIANA — A truck driver who had pulled into a gore area on I-80/94 to urinate was standing outside his truck when another semi-truck sideswiped the parked vehicle in the early morning hours Tuesday, ejecting him and leaving him hospitalized with serious injuries.

Indiana State Police responded at 3:30 a.m. on September 8 to the eastbound Burr Street exit ramp in Gary. The preliminary investigation indicates a semi-truck hauling Amazon packages was stopped in the gore area, the berm between the ramp lane and the interstate travel lanes — when driver Garbiel Corral, 33, of Chicago, had exited and was standing outside the truck when another semi driven by Ahmed Taher Hussein Al Subari, 31, of Dearborn, Michigan, sideswiped the parked truck. Corral was ejected in the crash and transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Al Subari was not hurt.

Eastbound I-80/94 lanes were restricted for eight hours following the crash for cleanup and investigation. ISP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is assisting. Charges may be filed after the investigation is complete.
