LAKE COUNTY, INDIANA — A crash between a car and an Amazon semi-truck on northbound Interstate 65 near 73rd Avenue in Lake County shut down lanes and sent at least one person to the hospital by helicopter Tuesday morning, with photos from the scene showing the Amazon truck over a guardrail and smashed into a bridge support pillar.
Indiana State Police Lowell District Corporal Melinda Lahr said the crash occurred around 7:50 a.m. The semi struck the overpass at 73rd Avenue. The truck driver was transported to a hospital. The driver of the car was also transported to a nearby hospital for observation. An earlier ISP update indicated one of those hurt was airlifted. Lahr said the truck driver did not appear to be at fault.
Photos shared by ISP showed the Amazon truck up on the grassy shoulder, over a metal guardrail and into the bridge pillar. A heavily damaged black sedan and debris were also visible across the roadway.
Northbound I-65 was closed between US 30 and 61st Avenue with traffic backed up to 101st Avenue. No reopening time had been set as of the time of reporting. The crash remains under investigation.
