CHEROKEE COUNTY, GEORGIA — A fully loaded tractor-trailer left Airport Drive early Wednesday, November 4, and jackknifed about 50 feet down an embankment. Both of its diesel tanks began leaking. The driver was not hurt.
Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services said the crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. The Cherokee County Fire Hazmat Team responded and quickly stopped the leaks, preventing more fuel from escaping.
Airport Drive was expected to stay closed for another three to four hours because the weight of the truck and its full load made recovery a lengthy operation. Officials did not give an exact reopening time, and drivers were urged to avoid the area during the morning commute and use alternate routes.
Officials have not said what caused the truck to leave the road, who the driver is, or what the truck was hauling. They also have not said whether any diesel reached nearby waterways or drainage systems.
