NEWPORT TOWN, VERMONT — A dump truck driver who forgot to lower his raised dump body struck utility lines on Vermont Route 100 on Tuesday morning, October 27, pulling the truck off the road and causing substantial damage to lines and poles. The roadway was closed for several hours.

The Vermont Highway Patrol was dispatched around 6:12 a.m. Inspectors found the dump truck off the roadway, entangled in utility lines. The truck is owned by Five Star Construction and was driven by Allen Charland, 53, of Westfield. Charland told inspectors he had raised the dump body and forgot to lower it. While driving down Route 100, he hit the utility lines, which caused the truck to leave the road.

Crews worked for hours to clear the scene. The Vermont Highway Patrol completed an at-scene crash investigation and a post-crash inspection of the truck. The Newport Center Fire Department assisted. The release did not mention any injuries or citations.
