DESERT HILLS, CALIFORNIA — A CHP Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility inspector spotted a 100-pound bag of barite working its way out of the wrapped portion of a load in lane #4 and nearly falling from the trailer. The inspector also found that several bags were already missing from the load.
CHP used the find to explain a common cargo securement question. Shrink wrap or stretch film can be used to unitize cargo, but only if the individual articles stay secured within the surface of the material. Under 49 CFR 393.100(b), cargo must also be secured to prevent it from falling from a commercial motor vehicle. “Simply wrapping a load doesn’t necessarily make everything inside that wrapping one secure unit,” CHP said.
The vehicle was placed out of service until the load was properly secured.
“Our officers and inspectors are looking beyond the obvious every day to help keep unsafe cargo off the road,” CHP said.
The post did not say when the inspection took place or whether any citations were issued.
