PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and Pennsylvania State Police have launched their second statewide toll enforcement crackdown of the year throughout October, targeting drivers whose vehicle registrations have been suspended due to unpaid tolls — and this time law enforcement has expanded tools including license plate recognition technology to find them on and off the Turnpike.
Troopers are conducting traffic stops on vehicles with toll-related registration suspensions. Drivers caught behind the wheel can face citations, vehicle impoundment, and driver’s license suspension. A driver triggers suspension when they accumulate $250 or more in unpaid tolls and fees or have four unpaid Toll By Plate invoices.
The spring operation in April resulted in more than 200 traffic stops, including a single record-setting day netting 23 drivers who collectively owed more than $130,000 in overdue tolls. More than 90% of those stopped took action to pay their outstanding balances, with approximately $85,000 collected on the spot. One driver stopped separately owed more than $100,000 and entered into a payment plan. Since April, troopers have stopped more than 1,100 additional motorists with toll-related registration suspensions.
As of August 2026 the PA Turnpike Commission has collected more than $74 million in unpaid tolls from violators and maintains a 92 to 94% collection rate. Since 2018 the Turnpike has issued more than 200,000 suspension letters to Pennsylvania-registered owners. More than 67,000 vehicles remain in active suspension status.
“The first operation made it clear that ignoring toll invoices does not make the obligation go away,” said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. “For those who repeatedly ignore invoices and ultimately have their vehicle registration suspended, there are real consequences.”
Drivers can avoid enforcement by paying invoices through E-ZPass or Toll By Plate. E-ZPass offers savings of up to 50% on tolls compared to Toll By Plate rates.
