AUSTIN, TEXAS — Southbound Interstate 35 near downtown Austin was closed Friday morning after a semi-truck struck a bridge above the highway at 11th and 12th streets, prompting lane closures that cannot be lifted until TxDOT’s Austin District clears the structure as safe.

Austin Police Department reported the closure just after 11 a.m. on October 2, noting only the far shoulder remained open. TxDOT confirmed the bridge strike and said all lanes were closed as crews assessed the damage. Traffic was backed up as far as East 51st Street near exits 234 and 235.

Drivers near downtown Austin are advised to seek alternate routes.
