IOWA — An Iowa State Patrol Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit trooper responding to a traffic complaint on I-80 on September 27 found a driver doing something that generated hundreds of reactions online — attempting to push another vehicle all the way to Nebraska at 31 mph.
ISP CMVU shared the incident on social media, noting that while the unit primarily handles commercial vehicle inspections, troopers also respond to traffic complaints. The improvised push setup drew a mix of alarm and reluctant admiration from commenters.
“Give em some credit! They were just trying to make do, and they really put some thought into that push pad. Gotta love ingenuity,” one person wrote. Another quipped: “The ‘I’m too broke to hire a tow truck’ starter pack.” A third joked: “So you’re saying if they were at the 40 minimum they would have been OK? Asking for a friend of course.”
One commenter took a more serious tone. “I’m a big advocate that anything ‘in tow’ needs to go through a scale for a CMV inspection. The folks without CDLs are doing whatever they want on the interstate and rarely get an inspection. Rather terrifying.”
