GLENDORA, CALIFORNIA — Nearly three months after being shot while responding to a gas call on the 210 Freeway in the early morning hours of July 3, Jan’s Towing driver Jorge Arias Mayen is still hospitalized at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center — but his employer says he is making real progress, has completed more than 15 surgeries, and has started walking again with assistance and a walker.
Jan’s Towing shared an update over the weekend describing the long road Mayen has traveled since the shooting and expressing cautious optimism about what lies ahead.
“It’s hard to believe that we are approaching three months since the July 3 incident that changed so much for Jorge, his family and all of us at Jan’s Towing,” the company wrote. “Today, we’re grateful to share that he continues to make progress.”
No further surgeries are currently scheduled. The immediate focus is on allowing remaining internal swelling to subside so doctors can eventually remove his feeding tube — a milestone that will mark another significant step forward. Mayen has not been able to eat or drink normally since the shooting. Once he is able to do so on his own, the focus will shift toward rehabilitation and therapy.
“Jorge has not been able to eat or drink normally since the incident and reaching that milestone will be another major step forward,” the company said. “He has also started getting back on his feet. With assistance and a walker, Jorge has been walking and working on rebuilding his strength.”
What Happened
Mayen was responding to an AAA gas call on the eastbound 210 Freeway just west of Grand Avenue in Glendora when gunfire erupted around 3 a.m. on July 3. He was struck and transported to a hospital in critical condition. CHP officers responding to multiple calls about the shooting located the suspect driving erratically. When the driver failed to yield a pursuit began, ending at a gas station on Arrow Highway in Covina. An officer-involved shooting occurred at the gas station and the suspect was killed. The eastbound 210 was shut down for hours on one of the busiest travel mornings of the year.
Jan’s Towing thanked everyone who has continued to support Mayen and his family over the past three months.
