IOWA — The Iowa State Patrol got an unusual assignment recently — serving as escort for an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet making its way across the country by semi-truck from the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, to its new home at the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum in Pueblo, Colorado, where it will be restored and placed on public display.
“Not every day you see an F-14 Tomcat rolling down an Iowa highway,” ISP said. “Proud to be the wingman on this mission.”
Aircraft relocation company Worldwide Aircraft Recovery is handling the transport. The journey covers approximately 2,700 miles rather than the direct 1,300-mile route between Pensacola and Pueblo due to route restrictions in various states along the way.
The F-14 Tomcat is perhaps best known for its starring role in the movie Top Gun.
