BRUSH, COLORADO — At least 10 cattle were killed early Tuesday morning after a semi-truck hauling livestock overturned on Interstate 76 east of Brush, causing additional vehicles to strike cattle in the roadway, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The crash happened just before 3 a.m. on I-76 near mile marker 102.
Cattle Hauler Rolled Into Median
State troopers said the semi was traveling westbound on I-76 when it went into the center median, rolled over, and spilled its cargo.
The truck had been hauling 48 cattle at the time of the crash.
According to investigators, three additional semis and a passenger vehicle later struck cattle after the livestock spilled onto the interstate.
Driver Taken to Hospital
The driver of the cattle hauler was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
The extent of the driver’s injuries was not immediately released.
No additional injury details were provided.
Cattle Killed and Missing
Investigators said 10 cattle were found dead after the crash.
Another 29 cattle were found alive.
Nine cattle remained unaccounted for, according to troopers.
I-76 Closed for Hours
I-76 was closed in both directions from Brush to Sterling for several hours while crews responded to the crash, removed livestock, and worked to clear the roadway.
CSP did not immediately provide an estimated reopening time.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
