GWINNETT COUNTY, GEORGIA — A crash involving a tractor-trailer and a car shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 85 early Friday morning after pieces of a concrete median barrier were knocked into the northbound lanes.
The crash happened around 3:35 a.m. on I-85 South between the Old Peachtree Road and Sugarloaf Parkway exits, according to Gwinnett County Police.
Tractor-Trailer and Car Hit Center Barrier
Police said the tractor-trailer and passenger car collided while traveling southbound.
Both drivers lost control and struck the center concrete barrier before coming to a stop.
According to police, the tractor-trailer’s impact broke off the upper half of the barrier and sent pieces of it into the northbound lanes of I-85.
Northbound Drivers Hit Barrier Debris
Three drivers traveling northbound then struck pieces of the concrete wall, police said.
Two of those drivers were Gwinnett County police officers who were heading home at the time.
After hitting the debris, the officers responded to the original crash scene to help the driver of the passenger vehicle.
Woman Taken to Hospital
Emergency crews transported the woman driving the passenger vehicle to a hospital.
Police said they did not immediately have an update on her condition.
No additional injury details were released.
Investigation and Cleanup Continue
All southbound lanes remained closed while crews worked at the scene.
The Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit responded, along with the Georgia Department of Transportation, HERO, and MCCD.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
