EVERETT, WASHINGTON — A man in his 30s led Everett police and Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase through a residential neighborhood Thursday morning after stealing a semi-truck from a downtown Safeway, ramming five patrol cars before being taken down with a 40mm launcher and pepper ball projectiles and arrested. Four Everett police officers were hospitalized with minor injuries.
A 911 call came in at 6:21 a.m. reporting the semi stolen from the Safeway in downtown Everett. Deputies spotted the truck about seven miles south near Silver Lake Road and 116th Place Southeast and attempted to stop it. The driver allegedly struck five patrol cars while trying to flee. One patrol vehicle struck a bystander’s car during the chase.
The chase spanned about four blocks of a residential neighborhood just west of Silver Lake before the truck stopped at 6:50 a.m. near Silver Lake and Andrew Sater roads. The trail left behind included crunched vehicles and a patrol car and the stolen semi ending up in the front yards of two homes. Law enforcement used a 40mm launcher and pepper ball projectiles to stop the driver, who was then arrested.
Four Everett officers were taken to Providence Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. A Snohomish County deputy and the suspect were also transported as a precaution. No other injuries were reported.
The suspect was expected to be booked into Snohomish County Jail on charges of assault, attempting to elude a police vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle following his hospital evaluation. Everett police said charges would be significant.
Snohomish County Sheriff and Mill Creek Police assisted in the response.
“This morning’s incident is a sobering reminder of the risks law enforcement face as they’re working to keep our community safe,” said Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin.
