ENCINITAS, CALIFORNIA — A semi-truck hauling ice cream drifted out of its lane, struck a guardrail, and overturned on southbound Interstate 5 near Encinitas Boulevard Tuesday morning, spilling its load and fuel across the roadway and creating an unusually sticky recovery situation for crews.
CHP Sgt. Curtis Martin said the crash happened around 5:50 a.m. The driver drifted, hit the guardrail, and overcorrected before flipping onto its side. Fuel spilled onto the road impacting the number three and four lanes. All lanes except the HOV lane at Encinitas Boulevard were closed while crews worked the scene.
“We are working hard to get this overturned semi back up right,” Sgt. Martin said. “Part of the problem is the ice cream and other goods are making the upright process a little more complicated.”
No injuries were reported. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors. Alternate routes include South Coast Highway, El Camino Real, and Rancho Santa Fe Road.
