COPIAH COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI— A truck driver was found dead outside his 18-wheeler near an Interstate 55 rest area in Copiah County on Thursday, according to local officials.
Copiah County EOC Director Darryl Hilliard said the man was discovered just before the I-55 northbound Wesson rest area.
Driver Found Near Passenger Side of Truck
Authorities said a passerby spotted the man lying on the ground near the passenger side of his truck and called for help.
Responders arrived and found the driver outside the rig.
Investigators believe the man had been dead for several hours before he was discovered.
Driver Was Hauling for JC Transport
Officials identified the victim as a 78-year-old man who was driving an 18-wheeler for JC Transport.
Authorities are withholding his name until his family can be fully notified.
Natural Causes Suspected
A preliminary investigation indicates the driver died of natural causes, according to Hilliard.
No foul play or crash was immediately reported.
