BERRIEN COUNTY, MICHIGAN — A 22-year-old truck driver from Chicago was killed Wednesday morning after his semi-truck rolled over and caught fire on Interstate 94 in Berrien County, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at approximately 10:24 a.m. to a crash involving a rolled-over semi-truck on I-94 in Watervliet Township, near Hartford.
Semi Caught Fire After Rollover
When deputies arrived, they found the semi-truck fully engulfed in flames.
The truck was partially in the median and was blocking both eastbound lanes of I-94.
The driver, identified only as a 22-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois, did not escape the cab and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
Truck Was Hauling Bottled Water
Deputies said the semi was hauling bottled water and was not carrying hazardous materials.
No other vehicles were reported to have been involved.
I-94 was closed between the 39- and 41-mile markers for approximately seven hours while investigators and cleanup crews worked at the scene.
Crash Under Investigation
The crash remains under investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff Accident Investigation Team.
No additional details about what caused the semi to leave the roadway, roll over, or catch fire were immediately released.
