RAINBOW, CALIFORNIA — CHP Rainbow Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility inspectors placed a massive loader out of service for a bent, inoperable safety latch on the trailer’s safety chain hook — a single failed component that was enough to make the entire load legally compromised under FMCSR and CVSA criteria.
The find was used as a reminder that a massive piece of equipment is only as safe as the smallest link holding it in place. A bent spring on a safety chain hook may seem like a minor detail, but it renders the connection non-compliant and can result in an immediate out-of-service order and thousands of dollars in fines.
CHP reminded drivers to check hooks, cross chains, and never roll with compromised hardware as part of every pre-trip inspection.
