Kansas Trooper Spots Wobbling Semi Tire While Driving Alongside It; Pulls It Over and Finds 8 of 10 Wheel Studs Sheared Off, Tire Would Not Have Stayed On Much Longer

KANSAS — A Kansas Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program lieutenant spotted a significant wobble on the rear axle of a semi-trailer while driving alongside it on a Kansas roadway and initiated a traffic stop — finding that 8 of the 10 wheel fastener studs had been sheared off on the outside dual tire.

The truck was placed out of service.

“Had this driver continued on his trip, this could have been very dangerous, for himself and those around,” KHP said.

The find is a reminder that visual cues from the roadway can be enough to catch a catastrophic failure before it happens — a tire carrying that level of structural damage would not have stayed on the vehicle much longer.
