BAYTOWN, TEXAS — A truck driver at a Baytown truck stop filmed himself getting some advice from an on-duty security guard that he clearly wanted documented, because he knew nobody would believe it otherwise.
In the video, the security guard explains that local police and the security team at the location actively recommend that truck drivers carry a firearm while stopped there due to cargo theft concerns.
“Here in Texas, at this location, PD and myself would recommend that you have your gun on you, so if anyone tries to steal off your truck or your trailer, you shoot them,” the guard says. “Because this is considered your home. Here in Texas you are protecting your home and your belongings that go to your home. So anyone that’s trying to present themselves as a threat, shoot them down.”
The driver, whose accent makes clear he is from somewhere considerably farther north, takes it all in and responds simply: “Right on. I wish I had a gun with me.”
The video is a good reminder that Texas Castle Doctrine extends to vehicles and property, but truck drivers traveling across state lines face a complicated patchwork of concealed carry laws that vary significantly from state to state. What is legal in Texas may not be legal in the next state on the route.
