GILBERT, ARIZONA — A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed Thursday afternoon after a large work truck failed to stop for slowed traffic on the Loop 202 Santan Freeway near Power Road in Gilbert, rear-ending four vehicles and pushing one of them off the freeway and down a steep embankment.
Arizona Department of Public Safety said the crash occurred just before 3 p.m. The work truck struck four vehicles from behind. The force of the impact pushed one of the cars off the freeway entirely. The driver of that vehicle, the pregnant woman, died along with her unborn baby.
Authorities did not immediately identify the victim or announce whether charges would be filed against the truck driver. Westbound lanes of the Loop 202 were shut down for several hours while investigators worked the scene. The freeway has since reopened.
