FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GEORGIA — A semi-truck hauling crushed cars to a metal processor rolled over at the intersection of Highway 145 and Highway 51 in Franklin Springs, spilling its load of scrap metal across the roadway and blocking the intersection — prompting drivers passing by to think they were looking at a serious accident before realizing the mangled metal was the truck’s cargo, not crash debris.
The Franklin Springs Police Department said no injuries were reported. The truck appeared to have been turning left too fast when it lost control and overturned, dumping the load of crushed vehicles. Community members familiar with the area said the driver was likely headed toward a scrap yard near Royston or returning toward the Atlanta area after a pickup.
Both Highway 145 and Highway 51 have since reopened after a multi-agency response that included Franklin County 911, Franklin County EMS, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Franklin Springs, Sandy Cross, and Royston Fire Departments, Georgia DOT, and Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance. Welborn’s Towing and Seymour’s Towing handled recovery and cleanup.
