SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — Hazmat crews and police converged on an 18-wheeler parked on the Interstate 35 access road near the Cassin Road exit Thursday morning after reports of an overwhelming smell coming from the trailer, which was later found to be carrying beef in a reefer trailer that had lost refrigeration, in triple-digit Texas heat.
The truck was reported around 9:30 a.m. on August 13. People in the area described the odor as unbearable, with temperatures climbing above 100 degrees throughout the day accelerating the spoilage. By 12:30 p.m. police had cleared the scene, but a private hazmat company, Lone Star Hazmat, remained on site to deal with the truck and its cargo.
It was unclear how long the truck had been sitting on the access road, when the refrigeration system failed, or whether the driver had been located. No further information was released.
