TEMPE, ARIZONA — A Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit trooper stopped a semi hauling a steel beam measuring over 60 feet on I-10 in Tempe early on the morning of August 7 and found the load secured with only three straps, the rear of the beam projecting 11 feet without the two required red flashing lights, a tint violation, and the driver not wearing his required corrective lenses. Both the driver and vehicle were placed out of service.
The trooper spotted the obvious tint violation and noticed the load appeared to have far fewer straps than required before even making contact. The inspection confirmed the steel beam was missing several additional straps needed to meet the length requirement. Because the truck was traveling before sunrise, the 11-foot rear projection required two red flashing lights, neither of which was present.
“Ensuring proper load securement, required lighting, and compliance with license restrictions protects everyone on our roadways. If you’re transporting oversized or projecting cargo, make sure your vehicle meets all safety and equipment requirements before you hit the road,” AZDPS said.
