PULASKI COUNTY, GEORGIA — A 75-year-old man is dead and his 22-year-old son is in critical condition after the pickup truck they were in ran a red light and slid underneath a Volvo tractor pulling a trailer loaded with feed corn at the intersection of State Route 26 and State Route 230 in Pulaski County Tuesday morning.
Georgia State Patrol said the Volvo tractor, driven by a 74-year-old man from Unadilla, was making a left turn on a green arrow to go southbound on GA-27 when the Dodge Ram 2500, driven by Rodney Hitchcock, 22, of Uvalda, continued through a red light and struck the right side of the trailer before going underneath it. Both Rodney Hitchcock and his passenger, Fred Hitchcock, 75, also of Uvalda, were entrapped.
Fred Hitchcock was pronounced dead at the scene. Rodney Hitchcock was extricated and airlifted to a hospital in Macon where he is listed in serious condition.
The Dodge Ram was also hauling a cattle trailer filled with cattle. Pulaski County Sheriff Wayne Wiley said one cow was killed in the crash and the remaining cattle were moved to another trailer. Corn from the Volvo’s load scattered across the roadway.
The status of the Volvo tractor driver was not released. Charges are pending and the investigation remains ongoing. Drivers in the area were asked to use caution and seek alternate routes.
