OOLTEWAH, TENNESSEE — A tow truck driver is facing multiple charges after deputies said he crashed a flatbed tow truck, appeared to be under the influence, and became violent while deputies tried to take him into custody.
The incident happened Thursday night, Aug. 6, in the 3200 block of Ooltewah Ringgold Road, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
Flatbed Tow Truck Found Off Roadway
Deputies responded to the area after receiving an automated crash notification.
When they arrived, they found a flatbed tow truck off the roadway and in the bushes.
The driver, identified as Ric Kennett, was not communicating with deputies and appeared to be under the influence, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies Say Driver Was Armed
Investigators said Kennett refused commands to get out of the tow truck.
Deputies then saw multiple weapons on him, including a handgun and two knives.
The sheriff’s office said deputies attempted to help Kennett out of the truck, but he resisted and became violent toward law enforcement.
Suspect Tased After Trying to Run
Deputies said Kennett also attempted to run away on foot.
He was tased and placed into restraints before being taken into custody.
No injuries were immediately reported in the crash or arrest.
Multiple Charges Filed
Kennett is facing two counts of assault on a first responder, DUI, evading arrest, resisting arrest, possession of a handgun while under the influence, and possession of a firearm with intent to go armed.
He also faces multiple traffic violations.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said details in the case could change as the investigation continues.
The sheriff’s office thanked the Collegedale Police Department and the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department for assisting at the scene.
