WICHITA COUNTY, TEXAS — Law enforcement agencies in Wichita County teamed up with ICE on August 3 for a commercial vehicle enforcement operation on US Highway 287 between Iowa Park and Electra, detaining 14 people for immigration violations and impounding five semi-truck tractors during 78 total traffic stops.
The operation, called “The Heat Is On,” involved the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and ICE. Deputies and DPS Weights and Measurements units stopped 67 commercial vehicles and 11 passenger vehicles. WCSO made 38 CMV stops and 11 passenger vehicle stops. DPS made 29 CMV stops. Eleven individuals were detained by WCSO and three by DPS for immigration violations. Countries of origin included Uzbekistan, India, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Mexico.
The operation was smaller in scale than Operation June Bug, a similar effort conducted June 25 that resulted in 93 commercial vehicle stops and 24 immigration detentions.
Sheriff William Rutledge noted one unexpected discovery at the end of the debriefing: the majority of the deputies and agents on the operation had never heard the Glenn Frey song the operation was named after and did not know who Glenn Frey was.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
