CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, COLORADO — A major multi-vehicle pileup involving an estimated 75 vehicles, including multiple semi-trucks, shut down Interstate 70 in both directions near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels on Tuesday, with dozens of drivers caught in snow-covered, hazardous conditions.

The crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. on April 14 near mile marker 216, where traffic from U.S. Highway 6 merges onto eastbound I-70. Authorities said slick, snow-packed road conditions contributed to the chain-reaction crash.

Dozens Injured, No Fatalities Reported

At least 19 people with varying levels of injuries were transported to hospitals, according to Colorado State Patrol. No fatalities have been reported.

Responders used the westbound lanes for emergency staging, with one lane reopening later in the afternoon while the left lane remained closed.

Highway Closures and Reroutes

Both directions of I-70 were initially shut down for what officials described as an “extended period of time.” Eastbound lanes remain closed, with traffic being rerouted over Loveland Pass via U.S. Highway 6.

As of Tuesday evening, officials had not provided a firm reopening time but estimated eastbound lanes could reopen between 8 and 10 p.m.

Additional closures were reported across the region, including westbound I-70 over Vail Pass and Highway 40 near Berthoud Pass, as crashes mounted during the storm.

Winter Conditions Contributed to Crash

The pileup occurred during a snowstorm that brought accumulating snow and icy conditions across Colorado’s mountain corridors. Numerous vehicles, including semi-trucks, were reported spun out or heavily damaged along the interstate and near the on-ramp area.

Traction and chain laws remain in effect across affected routes as conditions continue to impact travel.

Authorities continue to advise drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes as cleanup and investigation efforts remain ongoing.
