SALINE COUNTY, KANSAS: A 70-year-old California man was killed Monday morning after a Mack Granite truck left Interstate 135 and struck his motorhome, which was parked on the right shoulder while he used the restroom inside.
The Kansas Highway Patrol crash report says the crash happened at 9:17 a.m. on October 19 on southbound I-135, about 0.3 miles south of Smolan Road near mile marker 86. According to the narrative, the driver of the motorhome had stopped and gone into the RV to use the restroom when the truck left the roadway onto the right shoulder and hit it. The truck driver tried to correct and the truck came to rest in the median.
Michael David Shreiber, 70, of Lake Elsinore, California, was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries. He was taken to Ryan’s Mortuary. A trooper notified his next of kin at 10:07 a.m. A woman in the motorhome, listed in the report as 70-year-old Colleen Mary Schreiber of Lake Elsinore, was wearing a seat belt and had no apparent injury.
The truck was a 2026 Mack Granite with Minnesota plates. Its driver, 34-year-old Eric Dalton Shrick of Valley Falls, Kansas, and an 18-year-old passenger from Topeka were both wearing seat belts and had no apparent injuries. The motorhome was a 2006 Freightliner with California plates. Both vehicles were towed by A & A Towing.
The report lists the crash as a fatality with no hit and run and no police pursuit. It does not say what caused the truck to leave the road, and it does not say whether the driver was cited. The investigation continues.
