WHITFIELD COUNTY, GEORGIA — A Georgia woman was killed Thursday morning in a crash involving a Saia tractor-trailer on Interstate 75 in Whitfield County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The crash happened at approximately 5:47 a.m. on I-75 South near mile marker 326, also known as the Carbondale Road exit.

Honda Was Stopped on Shoulder, GSP Says

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2017 Honda CR-V driven by 67-year-old Donna Anderson of Chatsworth was stopped on the right shoulder of I-75 South.

GSP said a Saia tractor-trailer, driven by a driver from Douglasville, was traveling south in the middle lane.

Investigators said Anderson made an improper U-turn from the shoulder into the middle lane, causing the tractor-trailer to strike the driver’s side of the Honda.

Both Vehicles Came to Rest in Median

After impact, both vehicles traveled into the grass median, where they came to an uncontrolled rest, according to GSP.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The tractor-trailer driver did not report any injuries.

Lanes Closed During Investigation

Deputies with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters with the Whitfield County Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office detective and public information officer Brandon Fincher said deputies assisted mainly with traffic control while Georgia State Patrol handled the crash investigation.

The left and middle lanes of I-75 South were closed after the crash, along with the left lane of I-75 North.

GSP said the lanes reopened at about 8:40 a.m.

The crash remained under investigation Thursday evening.
