FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA — Arizona troopers and transportation officials placed 119 commercial vehicles and drivers out of service during a four-day enforcement detail on Interstate 40 near Flagstaff.
The operation was conducted from Aug. 24 through Aug. 27, 2026, in support of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Week.
More Than 300 Commercial Vehicle Inspections Conducted
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said troopers partnered with the Arizona Department of Transportation Enforcement and Compliance Division for the Arrive Alive Arizona commercial vehicle enforcement detail.
During the four-day operation, officials conducted 309 commercial vehicle inspections.
They also weighed 516 commercial vehicles.
In total, officers documented 1,042 violations.
60 Vehicles and 59 Drivers Placed Out of Service
AZDPS said 60 commercial vehicles were placed out of service during the operation.
Another 59 drivers were also placed out of service.
Officials said inspectors discovered a total of 161 out-of-service violations.
“Brake Safety Week didn’t slow us down, but it definitely stopped a few trucks,” AZDPS Highway Patrol said.
DUI and Drug Violations Reported
Troopers also made two DUI arrests during the enforcement detail.
AZDPS said three additional drivers were cited for drug-related violations and placed out of service.
The agency did not immediately release additional details about the arrests or specific brake-related violations found during the inspections.
Safety Event Held in Phoenix
In addition to the I-40 enforcement detail, the Arizona Trucking Association hosted a safety event at its headquarters in Phoenix.
DPS gave morning and afternoon safety talks on Aug. 26 to 58 attendees.
The presentations covered inspection procedures, brake system violations, common brake safety issues, violations found during inspections, and distracted driving.
Representatives from Cummins also gave presentations on disc and drum brake components and maintenance.
The enforcement effort was part of a broader push to improve commercial vehicle safety and identify unsafe trucks before they cause crashes.
