STRAITS OF MACKINAC, MICHIGAN — A truck or trailer tipped over on the Mackinac Bridge Thursday afternoon amid high winds and icy deck conditions, temporarily impacting traffic in both directions. The vehicle was righted shortly after the incident.
The rollover occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on April 2, 2026. At the time, winds in the Straits area ranged from 35 to 49 mph. The Mackinac Bridge Authority has since put escort requirements in place for high-profile vehicles crossing the bridge.
The following vehicles require an escort:
• Pickup trucks with campers • Cars with small boats, bicycles, or luggage attached to the roof • Ryder or U-Haul trucks • Any vehicle pulling a boat • Semi-tractors with enclosed trailers • All trailers with side walls over two feet in height
Motorists must reduce speed to 20 mph when approaching the bridge and prepare to stop upon entering. Bridge personnel are stationed at both ends to direct vehicles on when and how to cross.
“All vehicles must exercise appropriate caution,” the Mackinac Bridge Authority said. “The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring wind speeds at various points along the structure. Additional steps will be implemented if conditions change.”
Drivers heading to the Straits area can tune to AM radio 530 or 1610 for updates.
